Asem / Shaping the future of African legal practice

Asem Legal is the operating system for African law firms: one platform for matters, documents, clients’ money, due diligence, people and AI, with the rules of local practice built in. It is made by Asem Legal Software in Ghana.

Why we started

Ghanaian firms do sophisticated work, often with tools that weren’t made for them: spreadsheets for billing, paper court diaries, shared drives nobody can search, and foreign software that doesn’t know what a cedi, SSNIT or Act 772 is.

We set out to build software that starts from how Ghanaian firms actually practise, and to make it good enough for the best firms anywhere. Our mission is to give every African law firm the tools the world’s best firms take for granted.

When Ghana’s Electronic Transactions Act excludes a document from e-signature, Asem routes it to a tracked wet-ink process. When the Anti-Money Laundering Act expects due diligence, client money stays locked until it is approved. When data protection law expects security, firm data is encrypted, isolated per firm and logged.

The Asem way

The lawyer decides · Judgement stays human

AI proposes and cites; a person accepts. Conflicts, client-money movements and sensitive changes need a named person and a reason.

Compliance by default · Rules in the product

If the law excludes a document from e-signature, the software shouldn’t let you send it. Legal requirements are product requirements.

Honesty over badges · Say what’s true

We describe what the product does and doesn’t do, and publish only the certifications we hold.

Real conditions · Built for here

Mobile money, patchy connections and busy court days are design requirements, not edge cases.
